Establishment Purpose and Duties

The National Library, which is a national memory, a national archive, a museum and a research center, undoubtedly contributes to Turkish culture, science, literature and art life with its services. The services offered by the National Library are as follows:

 

Library Services:

The National Library offers the materials it provides in various ways, primarily depository, to the service of users and researchers 24/7 after the necessary technical processes are completed. As technological developments enable new applications, many library services such as catalog browsing, access to bibliographies and access to electronic resources and knowledge acquisition are offered via electronic environment. In addition, within the framework of inter-library cooperation practices, the works needed by researchers and not found in our country's libraries can be obtained from abroad.

Developing, Implementing and Leading Projects and Standards in the Field of Librarianship:

The National Library develops and implements various projects in order to increase its efficiency and service quality in line with changing conditions and needs.

  • Developing and putting into use the domestic library automation system (Kaşif), the license rights of which belong to the National Library and allow new module plugins,
  • Transferring the manuscripts and periodical collection to the visual system using a special software and browser and making the works available in full text with their tags (Digital Library),
  • Türkiye Bibliography System and Türkiye Articles Bibliography System,
  • Online membership, book reservation, photocopy sending, audiobook sending or access offered through the E-Government Portal,
  • Archiving of materials to be provided through electronic collection (Electronic Legal Deposit System- EyDES),
  • Providing online access to stone plaques in the collection (Phonograph Records System),
  • The Digital Information Management System software, which will enable the storage and transmission of digital data to be carried out in automation, are some of the important National Library projects that have been completed and are currently in use.

Apart from this, the National Library tries to be a pioneer by putting the best practices accepted as international standards in the field of librarianship into effect in its business and operations, and to help the society adapt to the universal information network by spreading similar practices in national libraries. Projects carried out at the National Library have made MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) standards widespread throughout the country.

 

Protection and Renewal:

In the Conservation and Restoration Laboratory of the National Library, the future of our important cultural artifacts is secured by the maintenance and repair of worn rare artifacts. In addition, the binding process is applied to the works whose bindings are old or newly added to the collection and to the periodicals whose binding integrity has been provided, providing convenience in their protection and use.

 

Digitization:

In order to prevent the originals of the works, each of which has a single copy in the National Library collection, from being worn out during use and in the face of natural conditions, and to ensure that they are transferred to future generations without deterioration, digital copies of the materials are produced in accordance with copyright legislation and are stored in electronic storage units.

 

Publishing:

Türkiye Bibliography, which consists of the bibliographic identities of the materials in the collection aimed at ensuring national bibliographic control, and the Türkiye Articles Bibliography, which includes the bibliography of scientific, cultural and artistic articles in the periodicals collection, are prepared and made available on the website. In addition, special-themed bibliographies and collective catalogs are published in order to facilitate research and studies about people and events that have shaped Turkish cultural life and to raise awareness on these issues. Apart from this, prestigious books for the promotion of the collection and publications on various scientific or professional subjects are also made.

 

International Librarianship:

As a member of international librarianship organizations, the National Library contributes to the work of the following professional organizations: IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions), CDNL (Conference of Directors of National Libraries), CENL (Conference of European National Librarians), ECO (Economic Cooperation Organization) Member Countries National Library Managers and SEENL (The South East European National Librarians).

In order to develop cooperation in the field of librarianship and to create new opportunities for sharing expertise/resources, bilateral agreements are made with libraries and institutions from abroad, and within the framework of inter-library cooperation practices, the works needed by researchers and not found in our country's libraries are procured from abroad. In addition, international book corners created founded in libraries abroad and book donations contribute to the promotion of Türkiye and Turkish culture.

 

Audiobooks / Talking Library:

In the Talking Library Center for the Visually Impaired in the National Library, the books are vocalized by volunteer usersin the recording studio constituted in 11 professional formats in line with the demands of the visually impaired members. In the audiobook archive, there are works in different categories such as novels, poetry, essays, stories, psychology, which consist of current and classical literary works, especially exam preparation and textbooks. Our visually impaired members can access the audio books in our collection from the Talking Library website. On the other hand, audiobooks are loaded on DVD and sent free of charge to the addresses of our members who do not have or have limited internet access.

The National Library Talking Library Center for the Visually Impaired, which was awarded the Public Application Award by the Turkish Informatics Association in 2012, the Service Award from the Public to the Citizens by TÜSİAD, and the Barrier-Free Balkan Award of the "Accessible Balkan Platform" in 2016, It received the Accessibility Award in the Field of Culture and Art, given by the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services.

 

Scientific, Cultural and Artistic Activities:

Every year, many cultural activities are organized in the activity halls of the National Library, from scientific meetings such as conferences, seminars, panels, to artistic events such as cinema, theater and exhibitions, and an important cultural service is carried out.
